RFYC Launches Internship Program for U-19 Scholars

Aug 6, 2024

RFYC has launched an internal internship programme for its U-19 scholars to provide them work experience and a deeper understanding of how different verticals of football function.

Over the course of the season, 18 scholars from the U-19 programme will rotate between various departments of the Academy and gain introductory learnings and hands-on experience working in fields like Sports Psychology, Performance Analysis, Video Analysis, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Ground Maintenance, Operations, and Media.

As part of the Academy’s drive to provide for the holistic development of its scholars, this programme will give the interns an insight into football related fields and help them explore the various new avenues within the sport.

RFYC recognises that not all the scholars who walk through their doors will have careers in football. But the academy strongly believes that keeping these players as close to football as possible will benefit them greatly.

The Academy emphasises on a “Plan B” where scholars in the U-19 team make a detailed plan of alternate careers or education they will pursue in the event that their training at the academy does not translate into a career as a professional football player.

The overarching aim is to prepare the students for life after the academy, where they will likely not have access to the help and facilities that they have at their disposal while here.

Robert Roelofsen, Head of Youth, feels this internship will benefit the players in the long run. “Showing these boys the ins and outs of the various departments will help them have a deeper understanding of the various disciplines in football and help them better implement the learnings in their day-to-day lives.

Exposing them to the various verticals in professional football will hopefully pique their interest and could translate into a long-term education and maybe even a second career.”
